Mistake #1: Building An “Email List”

I’m going to come right out and say it.

There’s a HUGE difference between building an email list and building an email list of soon-to-be buyers.

And being aware of this crucial distinction informs every decision you make.

From the type of lead magnet you create to how you engage with your new leads in the days and weeks following the opt-in.

Most gurus will tell you “the money is in the list”.

Better-informed experts will correct them and say “the money is your relationship to the list”.

But the truth is…

The money is in your subscriber’s relationship to the problem they’re trying to solve.

And unless your lead magnet and subsequent messaging confirms and reinforces that relationship, chances are it won’t lead to money changing hands.

So to summarize: your job isn’t to build an email list. It’s to build a list of future buyers.

Mistake #2: Bigger lists lead to bigger profits

Yes, numbers are important.

Especially your first 1,500 engaged, ready-to-buy subscribers as this number represents a fairly accurate tipping point for where your online business can become a full time gig bringing in consistent, predictable revenue.

But the quality of those 1,500 absolutely matters.

And where most people get it wrong is they chase after those first 1,500 subscribers any way they can.

They spam friends and family on social media…

They bribe people with gift cards and run contests for ipads…

Get the owner of a completely unrelated blog or social media page to share it…

Oh boy.

Mistake #3: Turning to Paid Ads Prematurely

I totally understand the frustration of the “slow trickle”.

But rather than taking a more strategic approach with free list building methods, most entrepreneurs jump straight into FB ads thinking that they can just throw money at the problem.

And I don’t blame them.

It’s what so many people preach in the online marketing world.

As if it’s so easy, right?

The truth is – running paid traffic and succeeding at it is FAR from automatic.

Mistake #4: Too many tactics. Too little strategy.

List building is “super popular” right now.

And as you’ve probably noticed, this has invited hoards of “experts” to jump out of the woodwork preaching some kind of epic new strategy that “floods” your list FAST.

Making it sound like the be all and end all.

As if you’d be crazy not to “act now”.


And the promise is oh-so-tempting (since we’re all looking for that magic bullet that will help us make up for lost time).

But more often than not, well-intentioned entrepreneurs get swept up in the siren song, testing and playing around with every new flashy tactic without diving deep enough into a PROVEN strategy that actually gets results.
